History of the P-TECH model

The NYC Grades 9–14 school model grew from the need to better prepare students for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. The model was developed through collaboration between IBM, the New York City Department of Education, and the City University of New York.

It built on New York City’s experience in career and technical education and early college high schools, creating a pathway that links classroom learning with industry-based skills training and clearer career outcomes.

Cross-sector collaboration

The strength of the model comes from partnership. NYC Department of Education, CUNY, and industry collaborators help shape school design, curriculum alignment, and career-connected learning opportunities.

This collaborative structure helps students experience a more connected path from education to employment while schools stay aligned with real workforce needs.
